Cystic Acne Can Be Prevented

When you’re indirectly affected by cystic acne, it is sometimes as difficult as dealing with it yourself. This is especially true when your child is dealing with it, going through adolescence or experiencing it into adulthood. No amount of sympathy or empathy based on past experience really helps, and when you try and help, you may find that you only serve to frustrate the situation even more. Nobody enjoys discussing their acne with their parents—don’t take it personally.

One thing that will actually help you help your child is a deeper understanding of cystic acne, how it forms, how it can be treated and how a focused and consistent effort can even help to prevent it.

The Cause of Cystic Acne

Surprisingly, cystic acne is formed like all types of acne. When dead skin cells from the surface of the skin combine with the P-Acne bacteria, and sebum (skin oil) from the skin’s sebaceous gland, they can clog a follicle, creating a small infection we all know as acne. Most of these problems occur close to the surface of the skin in the epidermis, and result in either a whitehead or a blackhead. When the clog and subsequent infection occurs in the dermis, the skin’s inner layer, an acne cyst, or cystic acne will develop.

Due to its nature, cystic acne cannot be extracted like other pimples. In the simplest terms—these pimples cannot be popped. One mistake that people make is to attempt treatment through extraction, which only serves to make the matter worse and can even make cystic acne more severe. While cystic acne can be prevented like other acne types, it cannot be treated effectively from the surface. While certain spot treatments may help with the discoloration of the pustule, they will do little to fight the actual acne cyst.

Does Cystic Acne Require a Doctor?

If an acne cyst is rare, patience will serve as the best treatment when combined with a quality skin care regimen geared toward acne prevention. If cystic acne is frequent, it is worth consulting with a dermatologist. Due to the severe nature of cystic acne, acne scarring becomes a potential issue when chronic issues are not treated effectively. More than likely, a dermatologist will prescribe something to reduce the amount of sebum produced by the sebaceous gland, and recommend a specific skin care regimen to ward off regular intrusions of the cystic variety.

A Quality Skin Care Regimen can be Simple

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to cleanse the face a couple times of day, and follow up with an astringent and a liberal application of an acne cream such as benzoyl peroxide. Many claim to have “tried” such a routine, but few offer such a routine the consistency it needs to become successful. One of the most common mistakes people make is to use acne cream as a spot treatment, when it is much more efficient and effective when used all over the face, as well as any other acne prone areas.

Benzoyl peroxide can be followed with a quality, oil-free moisturizer to help maintain balance and moisture within the skin texture.
